I did devise a workaround (which is not ideal because it uses a worse resolution). I show it below. Before I show that workaround, I show a plausible workaround which alas is less effective. I used to use this less effective workaround.
Do not criticise gratis stuff too much! Be grateful! Even so, LibreOffice Writer Version 7.3.5.2 (in Gaelic) is buggy. (Different builds on different operating systems on different computers might not be buggy. A tongue probably does not make it buggy.) E.g. it can crash when a computer has plenty of spare gigabytes of RAM when manipulating a *.odt file which has circa 370 footnotes with circa 52 pages; or sometimes even when searching.
Opening the same file in different versions of LibreOffice Writer results in different layouts. E.g. LibreOffice 3.2.1 and 4.x.
I find that LibreOffice Writer Version 7.3.5.2 is too buggy when manipulating a *.docx file (i.e. a file in a new format from Microsoft Word), so if you need to manipulate a *.docx file (e.g. a job-application form), then I suggest that you could attempt to open it with via a new version of LibreOffice Writer. If you must use LibreOffice Writer Version 7.3.5.2, then open a *.docx file and immediately save its contents as e.g. a *.odt file.
The word processor in OpenOffice.org 1.0.3 is unusably buggy.
(The spreadsheet application in OpenOffice.org 2.3.0.1.2 on OpenSUSE GNU/Linux Version 10.3 crashed five times in one day (miraculously apparently never losing any data) for apparently trivial reasons (viz. defining a new variable name; resizing the pixel height of a row; and quitting that program).)
An attacked friend has neither a typewriter nor a computer. Consequences of many attacks against him are handwritten letters by him can be difficult to read. He also does not have a photocopier. So I scan letters by him and I copy and paste copies thereof into LibreOffice Writer to print as appendices to letters to him.
I scan such letters at the highest resolution that a scanner allows: supposedly 1,200 DPI (Dots Per Inch).
Alas, LibreOffice Writer Version 7.3.5.2 tends to crash on me if it shows pages in a file into which 1200-DPI scans have been copied and pasted. Unlike most other LibreOffice-Writer crashes which I experience, LibreOffice Writer tends to fail to recover unsaved editing to such a file (but it falsely boasts that it does recover).

This screenshot shows LibreOffice Writer Version 7.3.5.2 crashing when attempting to show pages with pictures which were derived from 1200-DPI scans. These pictures are copied and pasted into LibreOffice Writer Version 7.3.5.2 and they are not 1200-DPI original scans (1200-DPI original scans would also be correlated with crashing LibreOffice Writer Version 7.3.5.2). Instead these copies have degraded resolutions via e.g.

Instead, I found that an effective method to avoid crashes is to replace a reduced -quality value by -resample with the original X and Y dimensions reduced by circa 100 (i.e. removing their 2 right-most digits each). E.g.

You may actually be surprised with the resulting dimensions, but its output is good.
