Has there been much research on programming languages from a "human factors"
viewpoint, much like there is with computer-human interfaces?

[I believe I've seen some such work. One paper said that for people with no
previous programming experience, a looping model of "do something, then
repeat it until condition satisfied" is more easily grasped than the usual
do while. -John]
