The Chinese state infiltrates the UK state at all levels. I represent a Chinese asylum seeker and dissident. If returned to China they will be imprisoned and tortured for their views. The Home Office cancelled the asylum interview in the autumn. In spite of my letters no new date has been provided. As a result they will be provided accommodation by the Home Office. But not without a fight. They applied for financial support and accommodation and for emergency support both 10 days before becoming homeless and again 3 days before becoming homeless. On the day they became homeless, they contacted the Home Office multiple times to seek urgent assistance. No support was forthcoming. This placed them under huge emotional strain. The Chinese state out to get them and about to be homeless. What happened next is seriously concerning. They therefore contacted the police 101 non-emergency line as a last resort. At that time, the weather was cold, and children was facing a real and immediate risk to health and safety due to exposure and lack of shelter. During the call, the Mandarin (Chinese) interpreter, instead of providing accurate and impartial interpretation, the interpreter repeatedly inserted personal opinions and made inappropriate, and humiliating remarks. Questioning why they had applied political asylum, stating that “China is a good country” the interpreter continued to abuse my client and sought to humiliate him. This is at his lowest moment. With the help ofLyndon L.we drafted Judicial Review proceedings but thankfully on the final hour accommodation was found. The Chinese State has a strong presence in the UK. Having family in China or Hong Kong means Chinese nationals remain a risk of leverage by the state and Beijing are not afraid to use it. The UK government’s attitude to the threat from China seriously underestimates the long term threats. In spite of there being no extradition treaty there are serious issues with Interpol Red notices and transnational repression. How can the UK seriously contemplate allowing the new Super Embassy which will be used as a base for espionage?
