Many DNS lookups are slow.

host by Internet Systems Consortium can easily be rapid. E.g. time host 81.167.26.57
57.26.167.81.in-addr.arpa domain name pointer 57.81-167-26.customer.lyse.net.

real 0m0.013s
user 0m0.008s
sys 0m0.004s

I use e.g. Report Magic (by Stephen R. E. Turner; Digital Nova Scotia; Wadsack-Allen; et al.) for Analog (by Stephen Turner et al.) to summarize data about a website.

Report Magic and Analog complete outputs in few seconds (even for 3,240,021 lines for 1018.9 megabytes (1068346403 bytes) of logs). I invoke them like . . .

  • mkdir deanta_air_an_2026-05-20
  • I copied *error.log* and *access.log* to deanta_air_an_2026-05-20
  • mkdir dar_le_rmagic
  • cd dar_le_rmagic
  • I copied rmagic.ini to dar_le_rmagic
  • analog +C'OUTPUT COMPUTER' +C'OUTFILE report.dat' ../*.log* > analog.stdout.txt 2> analog.stderr.txt
  • rmagic

HTTP://Gloucester.Insomnia247.NL/claran_de_fhrithealaiche-lin/deanta_air_an_2026-05-20/dar_le_rmagic/reports/HOST.html does not name hosts. E.g. HOST.html by Report Magic for Analog shows "81.167.26.57" — host 81.167.26.57
    57.26.167.81.in-addr.arpa domain name pointer 57.81-167-26.customer.lyse.net.

The logs in HTTP://Gloucester.Insomnia247.NL/claran_de_fhrithealaiche-lin/deanta_air_an_2026-05-20/ show 261,744 Internet-Protocol addresses. Bourne-Again-SHell-reserved-word command time reported "real 0m0.013s" for 1 invocation of host. So it is easy to (incorrectly) conclude that multiplying 0.013 seconds by the cardinal number of these IP addresses (0.013 seconds multiplied by 261,744 circa equal 1 hour circa equals 56 minutes plus 42.7 seconds) be a good estimation of the time needed to run host on all these IP addresses. Instead, Insomnia 24/7 started running host.BASh at Wed May 20 02:26:04 2026 (1779236764). It finished running at May 21 20:55. I.e. it took nearly 1 day plus 19 hours (i.e. nearly 2 days). So Report Magic and Analog practically do not run host

Some parts of host.txt are surprising. E.g. "50.133.101.89.in-addr.arpa domain name pointer lawlibrary.ie." is generated by "host 89.101.133.50" — i.e. decimal nubers are reversed! "50.133.101.89" is not in host.txt

The output of host.BAShhost.txt — surprisingly has 266,754 lines: i.e. more lines than invocations of host in host.BASh (i.e. only 261,744). It might have more lines than host invocations because e.g. 193.178.101.98 corresponds to more than 1 domain name — host 193.178.101.98
    98.101.178.193.in-addr.arpa domain name pointer geata.fiosru.ie.
    98.101.178.193.in-addr.arpa domain name pointer geata.gsoc.ie.

The 1st access datum in HTTP://Gloucester.Insomnia247.NL/claran_de_fhrithealaiche-lin/deanta_air_an_2026-05-20/ is for 2nd January 2017 at 15:39:05. Its last access datum is for 20th May 2026 at 01:15:44.
